Inspired by Redwall, the Mistmantle Chronicles, Disney’s Robin Hood, and similar stories, Woodlander uses a brand-new dice pool ruleset that’s equal parts pastoral coziness and heroic action! Players will explore a delightful yet dangerous world of anthropomorphic characters. Pairing an old-school feel with a modern design, this isn’t Dungeons and Dragons; this is something new!
Timid mice, sly foxes, fierce badgers, sneaky snakes, majestic eagles, wise owls, and everything in between. Diets, sleeping patterns, natural habitat, and size will all impact how characters interact with one another and their environment. Players will really feel like they’ve stepped into the shoes of a woodland critter. The only fluff will be their fur!
Woodlander uses a d6 dice pool to resolve the characters’ actions. Their skills and the situation they find themselves in dictate the likelihood of success. Thinking ahead and strategizing can allow even a novice to defy overwhelming odds. With five levels of success, each roll of the dice is guaranteed to result in an interesting outcome.
Woodlander provides rules for creating a detailed map and populating it with settlements, lairs, and landmarks. However, the journey is just as important as the destination. Weather, terrain, and wildlife will all provide challenges and obstacles to overcome as the characters travel to and explore these locations.
Once enough tension has accumulated, prepare for trouble! With Woodlander’s unique “tension” mechanic, it’s only a matter of time before something interesting happens; even the Game Master will be surprised. Players will need to think on their feet and roll with the punches to stay ahead of the curve.
Daylight fades with the onset of night, and the weather shifts with the seasons. When and where the characters choose to rest will impact their ability to recover from their ordeals and navigate the wilderness safely.
When a fight breaks out, expect to earn a few battle scars! Characters can and will be outmatched and outmaneuvered by their opponents, and players are encouraged to use every available advantage to achieve victory. Assess the situation before leaping in with drawn swords and shouting battle cries.
Players must manage their characters’ time and resources to achieve their goals. Downtime activities such as cooking, playing games, and meditation are vital to maintaining a character’s physical, mental, and spiritual well-being.
